What is gum disease?
This disease is generally the result of a bacterial infection irritating the periodontal tissue of your mouth. Mild gum disease is called gingivitis, while advanced gum disease is periodontitis. It’s worth pointing out that untreated gum infections are the leading cause of tooth loss in the United States.
What are the symptoms of gum disease?
For comparison’s sake, healthy gums appear pink and feel firm to the touch. Red and swollen gums are symptoms of a gum infection. If your gums bleed when you brush or floss, that is a bad sign, too. As the infection gets worse, you may notice bad breath that never goes away. Your gums may appear to be receding, and your teeth can feel loose.
How is gum disease treated?
Brushing and flossing daily can help prevent gum infections, but flossing also can play a role in reversing mild cases of periodontal disease. At our office, a deep cleaning procedure called scaling and root planing can be enough for many patients. When needed, we also offer a laser treatment to remove infected tissue and to seal the healthy tissue without sutures. This allows you to recover faster than you would from gum surgery with a scalpel.
