No Dental Emergency We Can’t Handle

Accidents happen.

One moment, all is calm and fine. The next, chaos has broken out, and you’re forced to drop whatever you’re doing and respond.

If you have a young family, then I’m sure you’re well acquainted with this feeling. Children have a way of inviting disaster, whether you’re prepared for it or not. It can be nerve-wracking, to say the least.

You’ve certainly done your best to “childproof” your home in those early years to keep them safe from sharp corners and chemicals beneath the sink, but you know you can’t protect them from every single thing. Sometimes, that anxiety can keep you up late into the night.

The rambunctiousness that children are known for makes at least one trip to the emergency an almost certain possibility before they turn 18. The real question is: What will you do when it happens?

A general medical practitioner can reset a broken bone, sure, but what if that fateful emergency is a dental emergency? When that happens, you’ll want a gentle family dentist whom you can trust to deliver the care your child needs in those critical moments.

No matter what the circumstance, Nashua Area Family Dentistry can help your family through any dental emergency. We are committed to providing you and your loved ones with same-day emergency dental care, because we know that life rarely follows your schedule when it comes to accidents.

Getting Your Child Through The Worst Of It

You must call me immediately to begin critical care and treatment if you or a member of your family needs an emergency tooth extraction, or more. If you call my practice before noon, we can see you or your child and provide treatment on the very same day.

However, there are a number of things you can do to keep your child calm on the way to see me. It is important to keep your young one as calm as possible, as their agitation could disrupt the treatment process from going as smoothly as possible, and can make their suffering worse.

The experience of having a painful oral injury is already traumatic enough for your child without you adding to it, so let’s take a look at some of the ways you can help them through it.

  • Remain calm yourself – If you cannot keep yourself cool and collected, then you are virtually guaranteeing that neither will your child. It’s bad enough that they are experiencing excruciating physical pain from their dental emergency, but you can prevent them from getting emotionally hurt if you can present a relaxed, confident attitude. This is a good thing to do in the event of any other type of emergency, and can build trust within your child to see you as a leader who has their best interests at heart.
  • Distractions are your ally – If projecting an aura of coolness doesn’t work, then your child might benefit from a harmless distraction from their pain. Playing their favorite song on the way to the dentist, or allowing them to play a handheld videogame, can take their mind off of their injury. You might also promise to fulfill an early Christmas or birthday wish, as well, if it can give them something positive to focus on.
  • Make haste, not worry – There is no time to waste in the event of an oral injury. But just because you need to move quickly doesn’t mean you should do so with anxiety. Learn how to coax your child into moving quickly without raising your voice or contributing to their worry, and you can arrive right on time.

These methods will make the trip to my office a less bumpy one, and will ensure that by the time your child is in my chair and getting prepared for a smile-saving dental emergency procedure, they will be calmer and more relaxed than they would be otherwise.

If the accident is sports-related, you might also want to schedule a future appointment to get them fitted for a set of custom-fabricated athletic mouthguards. Such a set of mouthguards will prevent anything like this from ever happening again, and will bestow confidence in your child on and off the playing field.
