If you’re considering your options for replacing your damaged or missing teeth, contact Nashua Family Dentistry for a dental implant consultation! Our dentists and team of dental professionals proudly offer this incredible tooth replacement option at our Nashua, NH dentist office. Compared to other tooth replacement options, dental implants offer many perks because they are:
- Strong: provides up to 90 percent of the chewing power of your natural teeth
- Convincing: Look, feel, and function just like your natural teeth
- Long-lasting: can last a lifetime with proper care
Dental implants also prevent bone loss in your jaw, helping you maintain your youthful look, and do not require any preparation of your surrounding healthy teeth to be used.
You may have friends or family that have told you about the many ways dental implants have improved their lives. Or perhaps you’ve done a little research on them on your own while dreaming of your restored smile. But what you may not know is that the development of this dental procedure came about through a happy accident.
In honor of dental implant month, we’ve decided to share some of the history and benefits of this fantastic restorative dentistry option!
Learn How Rabbits Led The Way To Dental Implants
Near the beginning of his career in 1952, Dr. Per-Ingvar Brånemark and his team placed optical devices in the legs of rabbits to examine how blood flow influences the healing process of bone tissue. When they attempted to remove the titanium-encased devices, they were unable to because the rabbit’s bone had fused to the titanium through a process we now know as osseointegration.
Perhaps needless to say, his research took an unexpected turn from there! Dr. Brånemark, a Swedish research professor and physician, had no background in dentistry. But that didn’t stop him from seeing how useful titanium could become in the dental field and beyond.
In the mid-1960s, he performed the first dental implant procedure, placing four of them in the lower jaw of a patient and attaching full arch of dentures. His patient, the very first person to ever receive such a procedure, enjoyed the function of his securely-attached dentures until his passing – four decades later!
Enjoy The Latest Advances In Dental Implants
Since the accidental discovery of titanium’s usefulness in dentistry, a lot of advancements have been made to make this innovative treatment even better. At Nashua Family Dentistry, we aim to provide our patients with the newest and greatest treatment options.
For example, along with our standard dental implants, we also offer mini dental implants! At most dental offices, if you need to replace a tooth that is damaged beyond repair, you’ll need to wait for your gums and jaw to heal some in between your extraction and dental implant placement. But when you visit our professional team, you can look forward to having your dental implant placed immediately following an extraction!
