Well, first of all, if they're a new patient to the office, generally they'll meet both the hygienist and the doctor on that first visit. We try to keep those visits very efficient. Last thing a patient wants to do is come in and spend three hours here seeing everybody, going through the X-rays and whatnot. So we try to keep it very efficient, but also make sure that we're able to thoroughly diagnose what's going on for the patient. If they come in with any specific concerns, we certainly try to address those right away. Otherwise we go through a process of exam with the doctor, X-rays, and then try to develop a treatment plan both to solve any needs the patient has for dental hygiene or periodontal concerns, but also address their restorative concerns at the same time so that they can leave here with a good understanding of what the next step is. That's really the key.
Dental cleanings and exams will probably be the services that bring you most often to our Nashua, NH dentist office. So Dr. James Kiehl, our other two doctors, and our staff make sure they take time to thoroughly examine you and address all your dental needs during your checkups!

Importance of Preventive Dental Care
You never want to take a “wait-and-see” attitude when it comes to dental issues! Ignoring problems like cavities, for example, can result in progressively more complicated and expensive treatments.
While we can usually fix a cavity with a simple tooth filling, a larger cavity will need a more extensive restoration like a dental crown. If the decay that created the cavity gets into the center of your tooth, it can become infected and require a root canal. With severe cases of decay, you may even lose your tooth.
During dental exams, we also perform screenings for:
- Oral cancer
- Gum disease, the leading cause of tooth loss in adults
Your First Dental Cleanings and Exams
At your first dental checkup, you’ll see one of our hygienists for a thorough dental cleaning and a full periodontal charting. This is a great time to discuss your current periodontal (gum) state and how we can treat any signs of gum disease, if necessary.
During your appointment, we also take X-rays and lots of intraoral photos. This will help us get a good idea of your current situation and let us know what we can do to improve your oral health. You’ll meet with one of our three doctors to discuss any concerns you may have and talk about treatment.
You’ll leave your appointment with a better idea of your current dental health and how we can help you improve it or prevent future problems. We recommend you see our trusted Nashua, NH dentist every six months for your dental cleanings and exams.
